Reclaimed Chestnut Flooring Engineered - Wormy Chestnut

Reclaimed Chestnut Flooring Engineered

Reclaimed Chestnut Dark Oil FinishThe American Chestnut tree (also known as Wormy Chestnut) was almost wiped out around 1900 when what is known as the chestnut blight destroyed most of the American Chestnut trees. Only a few patches of trees remained in California and the Pacific Northwest.

There is still an ongoing effort to repopulate the US with the American Chestnut Tree. This work is being performed by The American Chestnut Foundation. If it were not for the reclamation and salvage efforts by companies like Walter's Flooring, it would be nearly impossible to attain American Chestnut wood. Our reclaimed chestnut offers a distinct distressed and rustic look for your antique flooring needs and is mostly used in contemporary and traditional homes.

We also offer solid reclaimed Chestnut flooring for traditional nail-down installations. The engineered construction makes this flooring ideal for installations over concrete, in basements, and with radiant heating systems. Choose from hand scraped textures, wire brushed finishes, or smooth surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Wormy Chestnut?

Wormy Chestnut refers to American Chestnut wood that shows characteristic worm holes and insect trails from the chestnut blight era. These marks add distinctive character and are highly prized for antique flooring and rustic design projects.

Why is reclaimed American Chestnut so rare?

The American Chestnut tree was nearly wiped out around 1900 by the chestnut blight. Only a few patches of trees remained. Today, reclaimed chestnut must be salvaged from old structures since new growth is virtually unavailable. Learn more at the American Chestnut Foundation.

What widths are available?

We offer widths from 2¼" to 16". Wide plank options showcase the beautiful wormy character and are popular for contemporary and traditional homes.

Can engineered chestnut flooring be installed over radiant heat?

Yes, engineered construction is ideal for radiant heating systems. The cross-layer construction minimizes expansion and contraction, making it stable over heated subfloors.

Is chestnut flooring good for contemporary or traditional homes?

Reclaimed chestnut offers a distinct distressed and rustic look that works beautifully in both contemporary and traditional homes. The wormy character adds unique visual interest to any space.

Can I visit your showroom to see chestnut samples?

Yes! Our Los Angeles showroom at 9216 S. Vermont Ave is open Monday-Friday 8am-5pm. Call (213) 792-5908 to schedule a visit.

Do you ship reclaimed chestnut flooring nationwide?

Yes, we ship throughout the United States. Freight costs depend on quantity and delivery location. Contact us for a shipping quote.

What's the difference between solid and engineered chestnut?

Engineered has a reclaimed chestnut top layer bonded to a stable core (suitable for concrete and radiant heat). Solid chestnut is 100% antique wood throughout, ideal for nail-down installation over wood subfloors.
